Upward Bound Math & Science Intern (18+)

PURPOSE: Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS), a program created by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of underserved, first-generation high-school students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science.

With guidance from the UBMS team, the intern will assist with the coordination of after-school tutoring held in Frost Science’s Knight Learning Center. S/he will also assist with program evaluation administered through surveys, focus groups and other processes. Working in a highly creative and collaborative environment, the candidate will contribute to the development of training and curriculum materials. 

This position provides an exceptional opportunity to directly impact underserved students in a lasting, transformative way. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an academic program that will allow them to receive credit for completing this position. Duration of the position is based on the credit requirement.

SALARY: Unpaid, for academic credit.

  • Aid in planning and designing college readiness curriculum for program participants. 
  • Support the coordination of after-school tutoring services.
  • Assist in administering program evaluation materials (i.e. surveys) to students.
  • Research activities to enhance mentor training. 
  • Aid in the inventory of current and needed program supplies.  
  • Support program activities and related museum activities as needed.  


  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be actively enrolled in college/university and have a faculty advisor, or be enrolled in an internship program, to verify the hours and provide educational credit for the internship.
  • Background or strong interest in STEM Education and/or Educational Programming. 
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or (English/Creole) preferred.


  • Work is performed primarily indoors, with occasional activities held outdoors, sometimes under direct sunlight or light rain. 
    • Work activities include bending, reaching, and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of weight.
    • Though minimal, working with tools and chemicals (wearing personal protective equipment as needed) may be necessary. 


  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.


  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week.
  • Availability on select Saturdays is required.
