Inventors in Residence Intern (Coral Program, 16+)

PURPOSE: The Inventors in Residence Intern at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) will work alongside the Inventor in Residence for the Coral Program and the museumís program development team to conduct scientific experiments and engage the public in hands-on science activities related to the research.

This internship position provides an exceptional opportunity to develop research and scientific skills. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an academic program that will allow them to receive credit for completing this position. Duration of the position is based on the credit requirement.

SALARY: Unpaid, for academic credit.

SKILLS AND OPPORTUNITIES GAINED:  

  • Training in use of the scientific method from start to finish, helping to set up and maintain experiments, generating data, and participating in the analysis of results

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Maintenance of experimental systems, including cleaning and feeding coral fragments and systematically rotating fragments within tanks to ensure an even light field.  
  • Assist in taking coral tissue samples, and performing DNA extraction for later genetic analysis.  
  • Engage the public and visiting students in hands-on science activities, experiments, or labs related to the research.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Must be actively enrolled in high school or college/university and have a faculty advisor, or be enrolled in an internship program, to verify the hours and provide educational credit for the internship.
  • Should be organized, motivated, and interested in marine science and conservation. 
  • Pipetting skills are a plus.
  • Interest in science and Frost Scienceís mission.
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team. 
  • Must be 16 years or older.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:  

  • This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment. 

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Level 2 criminal background check clearance.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week.
  • Availability on weekends is a plus.
