Exhibit Design Intern (16+)

PURPOSE: The Exhibit Design Intern at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) will work alongside the Exhibits Department to assist with the design, construction, implementation and maintenance of our exhibits. Interns must be curious, creative and eager to engage with varied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in exhibit design, industrial engineering/art, museum studies or related field. 

This internship provides an exceptional opportunity to develop hands-on experience developing world-class exhibits for an internationally recognized science museum. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an academic program that will allow them to receive credit for completing this position. Duration of the position is based on the credit requirement.

SALARY: Unpaid, for academic credit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist with exhibit maintenance and repair needs, including problem-solving mechanical issues or wear and tear.
  • Assist with the design and construction of new exhibit pieces as needed.
  • Participate in exhibit and building projects including general prototyping, fabrication and installation.
    • Monitor museum exhibits for functionality through regular testing.
    • Provide set-up and strike assistance during special events.
    • Assist in set-up and tear-down of traveling exhibits and displays, including exhibit assembly and positioning in the gallery.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Must be actively enrolled in high school or college/university and have a faculty advisor, or be enrolled in an internship program, to verify the hours and provide educational credit for the internship.
  • Interest in STEM fields and Frost Science’s mission.
  • Experience or education relating to construction, craftsmanship, or mechanics is required.
  • Ability to problem-solve and be resourceful.
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team. 
  • Must be 16 years or older.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:  

  • Work may include bending, reaching, crawling, and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. 

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Level 2 criminal background check clearance.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week.
