Volunteer Scuba Diver (Adults)

PURPOSE:  We are searching for sustained, long-term volunteers that can commit to at least one 2 to 3-hour morning shift weekly or biweekly.  We are looking for divers on Saturday mornings only. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with a fixed number of positions available. Selected applicants must have a successful dive physical clearing them for diving, complete and turn in all paperwork mentioned in the description, and attend an orientation and training before they can begin volunteering. 

DETAILS: The Volunteer Divers at Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science will work alongside the animal care husbandry team to assist staff with the dive cleaning responsibilities associated with the exhibits; including underwater décor scrubbing, window cleaning, tending and supervising dives.  These dives are hard work and are not feeding dives.

RATE: Unpaid.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist with daily exhibit cleaning via SCUBA diving.
  • Tending and supervising dives.
  • Complete behavioral observations and monitor exhibit health.  
  • Assist with guest interactions and educational encounters.

  QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Certified as a Rescue Diver or higher by a nationally recognized certification agency.
  • Updated CPR, first aid, AED, and O2 administration certifications.
  • Over 100 logged dives.
  • Interest in working in a public animal care facility.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team. 
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

 WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:  

  • Work activities include bending, reaching, crawling, and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Work requires getting in and out of exhibits using ladders.
  • Work requires work in the water on SCUBA.
  • This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work is performed outdoors with some work done indoors. 

 CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • This position requires Background clearance.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Successful sign off on a comprehensive dive physical is required.
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine(s) by date of hire to be considered for employment unless applicant is eligible for an exemption and able to provide supporting documentation for an accommodation under Title VII and/or ADA with the Human Resources Department.

REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of one 2 to 3-hour shift on a weekly or biweekly schedule. 
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 100 hours per year.
  • Availability in mornings required.
  • If selected, applicants are required to attend an orientation before they can begin volunteering. 
  • Divers will be assigned their own wetsuit or purchase one through the program at a discount.  5mm thickness is recommended for the water temperature of the exhibits.
  • Must complete application and submit resume in order to be considered. Additional cover letter encouraged and welcomed. For diving, proof of scuba certification, up to date CPR, First Aid, AED, and O2 Administration certifications is required.
